The California Agenda (Lecture No. 6)May 17, 2005The Pat Brown Institute of Public Affairs presentsThe California Agenda Public Policy Lecture Series A New Progressive Vision for Los Angeles Featuring Mr. Joel Kotkin Hosted By Union Bank of California Tuesday, May 17, 2005, 8:30-10:30 AM Breakfast will be served The City Club on Bunker Hill 333 South Grand Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90071 (Parking is accessible below the Wells Fargo Building) This lecture will explore the nature of the progressive tradition, challenging much of what is now considered "progressive" in contemporary Los Angeles and California. Mr. Kotkin will offer his views about the urban future and what the past might suggest as the best way to deal with it. Mr. Joel Kotkin is an Irvine Senior Fellow with the New America Foundation, which is based in Washington, DC. He is the author of six books, including the newly published The City: A Global History ( Modern Library) which is a concise exploration of over five thousand years of urban history. Kotkin’s other books include Tribes: How Race Religion and Identity Determine Success in the Global Economy, published in 1993 by Random House ic and most recently the New Geography: How the Digital Revolution is Reshaping the American Landscape, also published by Random House and three weeks on the LA Times Best Seller List. Mr. Kotkin is a frequent contributor to the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Inc. Magazine, , the American Enterprise, The New Republic, the Weekly Standard and the Los Angeles Times. For almost three years he wrote the "Grassroots Business" column for the Sunday New York Times Money and Business Section. Over the past two years Mr. Kotkin has written major reports on the future of New York, the Inland Empire Region of Southern California, St. Louis, the San Fernando Valley, greater Los Angeles and Phoenix. He is a also visiting lecturer at the Southern California Institute of Architecture and lives in Los Angeles with his wife Mandy and daughters Ariel and Hannah.
