What do we mean by integration? Though segregation is adequately discussed or understood, integration is not. How do we recognize it? What criteria would we use to declare a neighborhood is integrated, especially in a multiethnic city? Are integrated neighborhoods stable? Is integration necessarily spatial? To answer these and other questions, this lecture will examine the changing pattern of integration in Los Angeles County and some of its social, political, and economic dynamics with special attention given to integrative policy options and their relevance to the future of American cities.

The California Agenda lecture series, a component of the Pat Brown Institute's Public Policy Education Program, was created to educate and engage California policymakers and decision-makers on important state public policy issues.
