This lecture will offer an overview of immigration in Europe, highlighting social exclusion, with its economic, political, cultural and spatial dimensions. Dr. Madanipour will discuss the challenges of governance in European cities and some of the current thoughts on combating social exclusion.  He will explore with the audience some ideas about the types of local solutions that are being used in Europe.

As the events of the last few weeks indicate, the U.S. faces the immigration question, once again. As a major area of destination, California has to grapple with immigration and its associated social, economic, and cultural issues, as well. Following the lecture by Dr. Madanipour, Dr. Modarres will reflect on the relevance of the European experience to California and the U.S. Beyond reforming the current immigration policies, we need to consider issues of integration and what the future may hold for the state and the country. During the last section of the lecture, Dr. Madanipour and Dr. Modarres will lead a conversation with the audience on this topic.

The California Agenda Public Policy Lecture Series, a component of the Pat Brown Institute's Public Policy Education Program, was created to educate and engage California policymakers and decision-makers on important state public policy issues.
