Visual Aid: Troubling Job Trends in Los Angeles
January 20, 2012
89.3 KPCC
By Matthew DeBord
89.3 KPCC's Matthew DeBord blogged about the troubling job trend in Los Angeles from the graph published in the PBI's 2011 Los Angeles State of the City Report. The blog included commentary on the job trend in Los Angeles. "This is one of those charts that shows the power of great graphics. In this case, the information represented here clearly summarizes the jobs crisis in Los Angeles County following the Great Recession."
One of the most disquieting findings is the high level of underemployment in college-educated workers in Los Angeles County compared with California and the United States. The underemployment rate in LA was 70% higher than the national rate, and the unemployment rate was 80% higher.
African American workers have the highest underemployment rate of any ethnic group. Overall, in 2009, 15% of African American workers were unemployed and another 9% were discouraged workers.
