FacultyAlan Kumamoto is a founding partner of Kumamoto & Associates, a marketing, management and communications general partnership. Alan has 35 years of experience in management consulting, resource development/fundraising, and human relations training. He combines his experience and knowledge of organizational development and community structures with is education as a sociologist to provide technical assistance consulting and training services. He was a consultant to the Ford Foundation Working Capital Fund for mid-sized minorit nonprofit institutions and assisted the National Marrow Donor Program with a national Asian Pacfic Communications Campaign. In addition to his work with the Pat Brown Institute, he teaches fundraising at the University of California at Los Angeles to nonprofit and public agencies and taught grantwriting to teachers for the Miliken Foundation. He works with public agencies, nonprofit organizations, and private businesses in resource development, proposal writing, meeting facilitation, strategic business planning, community needs assessment and evaluation, board development, volunteer recruitment, program planning, coalition building, and community outreach.Taffany Lim has been the lead facilitator for the Pat Brown Institute's Community Policing Program for the past five years. Her interests in nonprofit management and community services has lead to professional experiences with the United Way of Greater Los Angeles, KCET Public Television, and the Museum of Tolerance where she created and launched the Tools for Tolerance for Law Enforcement Program. Currently, she is an independent consultant who specializes in program development and management; strategic and operational planning; community outreach, and training and facilitation. She teaches courses at Cal State L.A. on volunteer management and fundraising, as well as youth agency administration. In addition to her work with the Pat Brown Institute, she has consulted with the Coalition for Zero Violence, Los Angeles County Children's Planning Council, City of Pasadena, Los Angeles Youth at Work, and a myriad of other small and large community based organizations. Taffany received her Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Social Welfare at UC Berkeley and completed her Masters in Public Administration at the University of Southern California. Dr. Alex Norman is Professor Emeritus of Social Welfare at UCLA's School of Public Policy and Public Research where he was Chair of Planning & Administration. He is currently an independent organization/transformation consultant specializing in strategic/futures planning, conflict management, community development, and managing multicultural environments. His roster of clients includes the City of Long Beach, Southern California Metropolitan Water District, Kaiser Permanente, and Los Angeles County Departments of Children and Family Services, Probation, and Chief Administration Office. In addition, he is currently involved in several research projects, including "Community Policing in Los Angeles: A Study of Organizational and Community Response to Change in the Los Angeles Police Department" (1995-2000) and "Police/Community Consultative Process in England: London & Bristol as Comparative Case Studies" (1996--). A facilitator with the Pat Brown Institute's Community Policing Program for the past five years, Dr. Norman brings extensive expertise in coalition building, collaboratives, and community development. Garrett W. Zimmon is currently the Chief of Police for the City of San Bernardino, California - a position he assumed on January 15, 2002. The San Bernardino Police Department has 450 employees, who serve an ethnically diverse population of 190,000. Prior to that position, Garrett served just under 29 years with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) where he attained the rank of Commander. During his career, he has been assigned to a variety of duties including patrol, homicide, narcotics, and administration. As commanding officer of a geographic area station, he was actively involved in overseeing and promoting community-policing efforts at the field level. He also held the position of Community Policing Administrator for the LAPD. In that role, he was responsible for coordinating the implementation of community policing on a citywide basis.. He also oversaw and managed the assimilation of the Metropolitan Transit Authority Police Department into the LAPD. His last assignment at the LAPD was at Detective Services Group, where he commanded most of the specialized detective functions for the LAPD. Chief Zimmon holds a B.S. degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Los Angeles; an M.A. in Public Administration from University of Southern California, and a M.S. in Management from California State Polytechnic, Pomona. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Command College. He also holds a certificate from the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. |
